If shooting hoops and hearing your sneakers squeak on the court is your thing, basketball is the perfect sport to get your blood pumping and adrenaline rushing.
Format
Section titled “Format”In-Person
Registration Guidelines
Section titled “Registration Guidelines”-
A minimum of five (5) and a maximum of ten (10) competitors can register per school.
- Separate registration for Brothers’ Basketball and Sisters’ Basketball

Only one (1) Brothers’ team and one (1) Sisters’ team allowed per school.

Your school may collaborate with another school to form a coalition.
- All points and awards shared equally between collaborating schools
- Check with your Regional Headquarters for more information

If a student does not attend their academic competition, they are disqualified from basketball and cannot register for nationals.
Game Rules
Section titled “Game Rules”MIST follows standard high school basketball rules (offense: traveling, double dribbling, charging; defense: goaltending, blocking, pushing).

Students must be enrolled in another competition in addition to sports.

All MIST rules and regulations, including dress code, also apply.

Failure to participate in MIST competitions and/or workshops results in immediate disqualification.

Game consists of two 15-minute halves.
- If tied after regulation (except playoffs), recorded as tie game
- No overtime for regular games

Playoff games: If tied after regulation, 5-minute overtime periods until winner determined.

Clock runs non-stop until final 2 minutes of each half.
- During last 2 minutes, clock stops on all whistles
- Official/team time-out stops clock during first 18 minutes

Each team may need one person at scorer’s table to operate clock and keep score.
- Forfeit may result if team doesn’t comply

Teams MUST have matching attire:
- Jersey with numbers (0-99)
- Same colored shirts
- No “Shirts vs Skins” or taped-on numbers

No basket scored on player control (offensive) foul, regardless of when ball is released.

Time-outs: 1 minute each, 3 per game
- Half-time: 2 minutes

Two technical fouls on a player or coach = automatic ejection
- Ejected player must leave playing area
-
Only one coach and one assistant coach per team on bench.

Bonus free throws:
- 7th team foul: one-and-one
- 10th team foul: two free throws
- 3-point attempt foul (no basket): three free throws

35-point mercy rule after 10 minutes in second half.
- If team drags or allows catch-up, game stopped immediately

Substitutes must be reported to score table and beckoned in by officials.
- Illegal substitution = technical foul

Backboard slapping: Not inherently a technical foul, but intentionally hitting hard enough to alter ball flight = technical foul

Unsportsmanlike conduct will NOT be tolerated.

Technical foul behaviors (possible game suspension):
- Cursing at officials, supervisors, or opposing players
- Insulting officials, supervisors, or opposing players
- Fighting = immediate disqualification
- Other unsportsmanlike acts

All unsportsmanlike fouls: two free throws + possession, regardless of player or bench foul.

Top three regional teams eligible to compete at National tournament.

All competitors must have registered and competed at Regional to be eligible for Nationals.
