Express your creativity through fashion design by creating a cohesive collection that reflects this year’s theme.

In-Person

On-Site:

  • Collection Portfolio
  1. No more than four (4) students from each school can register.
  2. This competition is NOT a team effort. Each competitor must turn in separate work.
  3. MIST ID and order of competition will be pre-assigned randomly.

Your portfolio must include:

  1. Cover/Presentation Case — Be creative!

  2. Philosophy Statement (500 words max)

    • How you’ll use the theme as inspiration for your collection
    • Example: “Loyalty + Environment (trees, landscape)”
    • Serves as your written component
  3. Mood/Inspiration Page — Images that inspire your collection

  4. Fabric Swatch/Color Palette Page

  5. Six (6) Outfits in one of these combinations:

    • OPTION 1: 3 adult female + 3 adult male outfits
    • OPTION 2: 6 complete male OR 6 complete female outfits

For each of the 6 outfits, submit:

  • Must be hand-drawn (no photographs)

  • Acceptable media: colored pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, colored pen/ink, crayons
  • Outfits can be on a figure or as colored flats
  1. All designs labeled with MIST ID ONLY.

  2. Provide a common feature within the set (similar buttons, colors, etc.).

  3. Designs must be modest while exuding creativity.

  4. Designs should inspire comfort, confidence, and dignity.

  5. Be original in all designs.

  • Each participant interviewed for 5 minutes
  • If more than 15 entries, only top 15 (based on portfolio) will be interviewed

  • Inspiration behind the design
  • What you like most and dislike most
  • Outstanding or unusual details
  • What makes your designs different from others in the market

Technical
  • Presenter is on time for the interview
  • Presenter is dressed for an interview
  • Written statement does not exceed 500 words
  • Submission meets required formatting guidelines

Purpose
  • Evidence of student's effort to achieve stated purpose
  • Portfolio clearly communicates a cohesive collection
  • Work integrates expression, organization, technique, and MIST's theme

  • Superior level of skills in illustration and flat sketches
  • Design required time and patience
  • Process shown through mood boards and development
